Oscar Party!

Last night, like many others, the Mohawk House hosted our very own Oscar party.

Aside from good friends, and some seriously excellent food courtesy of my roommate Co, we've found the key to a good Oscar party is ... drum roll ... Oscar Bingo!

Instead of ballots, we did bingo. The bingo cards were from Jessica at How About Orange and they made the show a lot more entertaining. We wound up listening to all of the speeches and paying attention to EVERY little detail in order to mark boxes off on the bingo cards.

Prizes went to the first, second, and third people to fill up 2 sets of rows or columns. It actually took about an hour and a half for us to get our first winner, and another 30 minutes for our second place winner to be called.

All in all a great night, and an entertaining party!

Gardening Itch

I've been getting the itch to start our garden up again for Spring. We have one "Winter" garden going right now, but I just found these photos from our garden last Spring (links here and here) and I suddenly can't wait to plant tomatoes and herbs again!

While we have a couple of weekends yet until we ramp up the garden, I'm still getting excited...

8/52: Meditation on the Racetrack

Last weekend I took 8 of my closest friends out to my happy place: Death Valley National Park. We had an amazing three days of adventuring and many awesome photos were taken, but this one, from the Racetrack, is one of my favorites:

Wacky Wednesday: Wacky Kitty

Some of you know my cat Bycx - she used to belong to some friends in SLO and she has since moved into my parents' house. They've sort of adopted her, and she rules the roost - so I've never had the heart to move her out of there and around San Diego with me. So while she's "technically" my cat, she's really just one of the family.

At any rate. She's crazy. I don't know why, but she has developed some interesting quirks. She thinks she's a puppy, she can do higher level calculator math, she regularly changes the screen display parameters on various computers (Mac or PC, doesn't seem to matter), and instead of killing the gophers or mice in the area around the house - she befriends them.

Gotta love her. This past week I snapped two pictures of her/ her "talents":

Her higher level math/calculator skills

Waiting for her gopher friend to pop up.
She used to play whack-a-mole with the gophers in the yard, now they touch noses and sniff each other... Like I said, she's quirky.

7/52: Heavenly Work

I really do love my "job". Having my own landscape design studio means I get to run my own schedule. When I get tired of looking at plants on the computer or in stacks of books and print outs I head out to one of the nurseries that I specify from. And this is how I spent Wednesday afternoon - in my own version of heaven:

Etsy Rocks my World - iPhone Style

As any follower of my blog can tell you, I'm a huge Etsy fan/addict. Its a very supportive community for crafters, artists, and the like that I am proud to be a small part of. I not only sell jewelry there, but I buy supplies for my jewelry and I do a great deal of my shopping there. I buy purses, gifts for friends, buttons, laundry sachets and felted dryer balls, reusable sandwich bags, beanies, and all of my makeup off Etsy.

So in November when I upgraded to my iPhone 4 and I had to say good bye to my amazing Threadless case, my friend KS (also a huge Etsy addict) suggested I check out her latest purchase from downstairsDesigns.

I've been using it for a couple of months now and absolutely love it! My little phone wallet is perfect for sticking in my back pocket and taking off for the day or even the night - my i.d., credit card, and a couple of bills fit securely and perfectly in either the front or back pocket, and my phone slides right in - even with its case on.

Speaking of cases. I'm the biggest klutz in the world, and I drop things, including my expensive iPhone, ALL  the time. In addition to the phone wallet I also went in search of an iPhone 4 case on Etsy. As per usual, Etsians did not disappoint.

I've been using this adorable Where the Wild Things Are case from Record Wallets for a couple of months now too. It is not only great for comments, but awesome for saving my iPhone when I drop it. I drop my phone about once a week, and not only has my phone survived, but the case doesn't even have a crack. Well done! Two more happy Etsy shopping experiences in the bag!

6/52: Lawn Games and Building Blocks

I know I'm a little late on last week's photo - so here is a belated Photo Friday post, lets call it Photo Wednesday:

This is the second weekend this year where we have been lucky enough to spend an afternoon in Balboa Park playing lawn games and getting sun. I must admit, living in Southern California sure has its perks. Anyway, after a very intense (and a whole lot of smack talking) match C, K, and I got whipped in a best of 3 match of Kubb by GB, J, and Ky. It was a great afternoon, and one we hope to repeat again soon.

After our match K and my sister started stacking the Kubb pieces and this was the most impressive of structures either of them completed.

Kubb? I hear you say! Its a Viking lawn game, involving a bunch of wooden pieces. Check it out here.

5/52: Friday night at the Local Bar

Our local bar, really an Italian restaurant with a varied and fantastic beer selection, is a favorite stop for my roommates and I. Its less than a block away from our house (6 houses over and half a block South). On roommate nights we find ourselves walking over there, order scrumptious take away food and enjoying a beer while we wait for our food. This was Friday night's beer selection:

Etsy Treasury! Put a Bird On It San Diego...

... I'm having way too much fun putting together treasurys on Etsy. After watching Portlandia last night I really felt the need to do a "Put a bird on it" themed treasury.

To make it a bit more challenging on myself I decided to feature items only if they had birds or feathers AND if the artists/crafters were part of the Etsy Artisans of San Diego County Team (@EASDCTeam) of San Diego Etsians. It was really fun as I wound up going through most of the shops in our team and poking around.

Want to scoot around the treasury? Check it out here: In San Diego, We Put Birds on Things.
